10 Tips for Acing an Interview

Here at The Recruitment Company, we deal with a lot of people from all sorts of backgrounds. Our job is to help people find the right position and we have a variety of ways that we use to do that. Part of that process is a face-to-face interview with one of our friendly team members, but this can be a bit daunting if you aren’t used to it. Here are 10 tips for acing an interview:

1. Dress like you mean it.

You only get one chance to make a first impression, so make sure that it’s right. This doesn’t necessarily mean a suit and tie, but dress accordingly. As a minimum, tidy jeans and a shirt means that an employer is going to recognise that you have put some effort into your presentation. Avoid hoodies and beanies, remove hats and dark glasses before you meet.

2. Be on time!

Arrive early if possible, or at least on time. If you can’t show up to the interview on time, the employer will question whether you will show up to work on time, too. Arriving early shows you are enthusiastic and organised; traits that a prospective employer will value.

3. If you want to be taken seriously, be serious about it.

Bring your game face and make sure your attitude is spot on. Show interest in what you are being asked and told and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Well thought out queries prove to an employer that you are genuinely interested in their business.

4. Do your research.

Before the interview, take some time to research on the company you are applying with, or in the instance of applying through a recruitment company, know a bit about them too. Check out their website and look for testimonials from people who have worked with and for them. This can be invaluable when you arrive to talk to the company.

5. Present yourself well.

Present yourself in the best way you possibly can. Get some sleep the night before, shower and ensure your personal hygiene is top notch. Expect the employer to assume that how you represent yourself will be how you represent them.

6. Be organised.

When you get to the interview, make sure you have all the relevant details that you will need. Things like ID, licences, and any certificates or training records that you feel will bolster your chances are an essential part of your opportunity to sell yourself.

be confident at your interview

7. Be confident.

Everyone is nervous at an interview, but it’s important to be confident in yourself. A firm handshake and introducing yourself in a confident manner helps to set the tone for the interview. Speak confidently, don’t slouch and answer questions in the best way you can.

8. Thank them for their time.

Like you, employers are busy people and manners still go a long way. Even if you are unsuccessful, good manners are remembered.

9. Learn from the experience.

If you are unsuccessful, don’t be afraid to ask the interviewer why you missed out. Knowing the reasons you didn’t get the job can provide an opportunity to better yourself next time.

10. Don’t be discouraged.

Sometimes we miss out because there is another candidate who has more experience or a different skill set than us. Sometimes their personality might be a better fit for the employer’s team. Whatever the reason, stay positive, learn what you can from each opportunity and learn to take something away from each interview.

We hope these tips will help you with your next interview! Stay positive, smile and be confident. Nonverbal body language is also a part of an interview. The way you come across to others without even speaking is readily apparent. If we can be of assistance, don’t hesitate to contact us and we’ll be glad to help. Good luck out there!
